Tertiary institutions across Aotearoa are presented with significant opportunities and challenges, as AI’s potential to shape and reshape tertiary education is realised. While valuable insights and innovations are created within individual institutions, the strategic task of reconceptualising New Zealand-based education in the age of AI is too complex for any one institution to navigate alone.

The Aotearoa Tertiary AI Network (ATAIN) aims to connect universities, polytechnics, PTES and wānanga to share knowledge and resources which would otherwise remain siloed.

We strive to develop collaborative, educationally sound, and culturally relevant approaches to AI that reflect Aotearoa’s unique values and needs. In the context where AI development occurs primarily offshore, we create space for place-based innovation and collective problem-solving.

We facilitate regular virtual meetups, connecting educators from across the country and fostering the timely sharing of practices and knowledge exchange, so our community remains responsive to AI’s rapid evolution.

Through our FLANZ-hosted platform, we support the sharing of resources, practical tools, case studies, and implementation guides.

We support others to organise interest groups to address specific issues and challenges.

We create opportunities for deep discussion, learning and experimentation.

In-person hui to connect and further support relationship building, knowledge sharing, community development and future planning.

We value reciprocal learning, where everyone is both teacher and learner, recognising the newness of AI in education and the opportunity to learn from one another. All members engage in reciprocal learning within a dynamic tuakana-teina relationship.

Extend hospitality and support to all members, ensuring an inclusive community where knowledge is shared generously amongst members and institutions.

Work together towards a unified purpose of growth, knowledge sharing, and broader changes while respecting institutional and perspective differences.

Protecting values-driven education approaches, avoiding techno-centrist change while prioritising learners, learning, and principled education practices.

Together, we can shape how Aotearoa’s tertiary education responds to AI through collective wisdom, practical innovation, and shared purpose.

Membership in the ATAIN is free and open to educators from all sectors of tertiary education (Institutes of Technology & Polytechnics, Universities, and Private training establishments).

ATAIN is focused squarely on ako – learning and teaching – in all its forms.

Issues centred around purely technological, ethical, or political aspects of AI that are not related to learning or teaching are out of scope to this CoP
