Rob Nelson, Doctor of Professional Practice ākonga in the College of Work Based Learning, Otago Polytechnic Te Pūkenga, facilitated the webinar ‘Collaborating with ChatGPT on your team’ on Thursday, 21 March 2024. In it, he introduced us to a simulation project with students at Otago Polytechnic in which a team used ChatGPT not just as a tool, but as if it were another team member. In his presentation, Rob discussed the project questions and reflections that the team members had.
Webinar participants then split up into breakout rooms to discuss one of the following questions:
- How could ChatGPT (as a team member) be integrated into existing learning activities?
- Would you put boundaries on the roles ChatGPT could play as a team member and, if so, what would they be?
- Do the potential disadvantages outweigh the potential advantages of integrating ChatGPT as a team member, and why?
Participants agreed that ChatGPT or similar chatbots could be used as a team member, but that any output from them would need to be critically reviewed and utterings not taken at face value. It should also be transparently clear, what the bot’s contribution was, and how its use fit into the larger context of the use of artificial intelligence at an institution.
